asbl EDUnet vzw In early July 93, Giedo Custers, Michel Gillet, Andre Rombauts and Louis Van Geel founded EDUnet. EDUnet is a non-profit registered (asbl/vzw) association independant from any educational authority. It has been set up in order to give a wide e-mail access to teachers, students, parents, etc - in fact to anyone interested in education matters. The first large scale education e-mail project in Belgium, DIDACnet, has been conceived on a school base rather than on an individual one. EDUnet is opened to everyone either located in a school or at home (1). EDUnet shares the views of the K12net foudner, Jack Crawford: move the mail to as many teachers, students and parents, as quickly as possible and at the lowest cost possible. That's why J. Crawford choose the Fidonet technology and network. In the future the Fidonet solution might become less attractive but for the moment it IS the only valuable solution for schools, teachers and students. To achieve his goal EDUnet refused to create a new "network" using its own zone number and domain (2). Instead we are fully supporting the K12net network. EDUnet will just add local - on a European base - Echos that teachers, students and parents will use to exchange ideas more easily. In fact EDUnet is the core of a K12net Europe. But EDUnet is not only a series of additional Echos. Just as language or science teachers are gathering themselves in private associations because of common interests, teachers - but also students and parents - thinking that e-mail is a wonderful teaching and learning tool decided to act in the same way. EDUnet thus can be considered as a promotional channel for e-mail usage in education. If you are interested in taking part to our association or simply want to get more information, please do send a netmail to one of the members of the Board of Directors: Giedo Custers, 2:292/104@fidonet.org, secretary for the Dutch speaking part Michel Gillet, 2:293/2401@fidonet.org, secretary for the French speaking part Andre Rombauts, 2:293/2206@fidonet.org, president Louis Van Geel, 2:29/777@fidonet.org, treasurer You can also get a full info package by requesting one of the following files either on 2:293/2206@fidonet.org or 2:29/777@fidonet.org EDUNET_DU Dutch info package (3) EDUNET_EN English (3) EDUNET_FR French EDUNET_GE German (3) for asbl EDUnet vzw, Andre Rombauts --- (1) DIDACnet is an e-mail project initiated by sevaral local official education authorities and supported by the BBL bank. B-net is in charge of the technical aspect of this network. It is still in an experimental period. It first used a private Fidonet zone and domain but is now using existing Fidonet R29 nodes to carry mail to school-points listed in a private list. (2) By the way, there is in the United States an education network also called EDUNET, using a private zone number and domain. It has been organized by Jace Carlson who is also responsible for a Christian network. (3) Not yet -but soon- available. A message will be posted as soon as the other language packages are available.
